Wall & Ceiling Prep Guide

Drywall patching, skim coating and interior paint prep.

Fresh paint does not hide drywall defects; any sheen above flat highlights them. When a quote says "patch minor holes and sand," two painters can mean completely different amounts of labor. Spelling out the exact level of drywall repair keeps bids comparable.

Four tiers of interior wall and ceiling preparation

Use this schedule to separate routine picture-hook filling from heavy drywall repair or skim coating on your scope sheet.

Four tiers of interior drywall and paint preparation
Prep tierWhat it coversWhat the quote should state
1. Standard paint prep Pinholes, picture hooks, light pole-sanding between coats Filling small nail holes with spackle, scuff-sanding walls with a pole sander, caulking hairlines along door casings and baseboards, and spot-priming patches.
2. Nail pops and settlement cracks Loose drywall screws, corner tape lifts, header cracks Setting a new drywall screw beside each popped fastener, cutting out loose paper tape, embedding new tape in joint compound, feathering 8 to 12 inches wide, and priming.
3. Cutouts and water stains Plumber/electrician access holes, roof or bath leak rings Backing cutouts with wood cleats, taping and applying three coats of compound, matching orange-peel or knockdown texture if present, and sealing water stains with alkyd or shellac stain-blocker.
4. Wallpaper removal & skim coat Stripping wallcovering, sealing glue, full-surface compound Removing facing and backing paper, washing adhesive residue, sealing torn drywall paper with oil or gardz sealer, and troweling a full skim coat before PVA primer.

Why unprimed patches flash through two coats of paint

Flashing is the most common complaint after an interior repaint, and it comes down to porosity.

  1. Joint compound absorbs binder. Bare spackle and joint compound soak up the liquid resin in finish paint faster than the painted wall around them, leaving a dull, chalky spot visible at an angle.
  2. Spot priming seals the patch. Rolling a dedicated drywall primer or a thinned coat of flat paint over every repair before the two full wall coats equalizes porosity so the final sheen looks uniform.
  3. Raking light shows everything. Hallways with windows at the end and walls under recessed downlights catch side light. Specify flat or matte paint on those walls unless the quote includes extensive skim coating.
